Major Edward Brian Walker – 44459

Edward Brian Walker was born in Bolton on 11th November 1908. His father, Arthur Noel Walker (1878 – 1950) was a leather tanner. His mother was Beatrice Walker (1883 – 1950). He has two other brothers and during the 1911 census the household consisted of the 5 members of the Walker family plus 5 servants (waitress, cook, housemaid and two nurses).

Edward was educated at the Leys School in Cambridge before going into the family business and was a director of William Walker and Sons Ltd, Driped Ltd, Bolton Leathers Ltd and the Premier Hide and Leather Co. Ltd of Northampton.

On 14th November 1929, Edward joined the 53rd Bolton Field Brigade, Royal Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant.

On 28th September 1938, Brian’s engagement to Beryl Mary Bolton was announced in the Lancashire Evening Post, and on 18th May 1939 they were wed at Woodplumpton Parish Church near Preston.

Edward was mobilised as part of the TA on 24th August 1939 and quickly rose through the ranks of 1st Lieutenant, Captain and Major in the end of 1941.

It is not known when Edward joined the 111th Field Regiment, but he was with them from June 1942 when they shipped out from Scotland to Egypt via South Africa. Edward was appointed to command 476 Bty of 111th Field Regiment RA.

Sadly on 1st March 1943 near Metameur, Tunisia, the War Diary at 15:08hrs states…”Major C. B. Walker RA was injured and subsequently died from
a wound fired by his battery whilst he was ranging. New D.F. tasks were registered by 212 Bty and 476 Bty.” He was 34 years old.

Edward is buried at Sfax War Cemetery in Tunisia.
